Seeing the Elephant was created to help collectors better understand the history of Smith & Wesson firearms.
Our Mission
Every Smith & Wesson has a story.
Some were carried by police officers. Some accompanied soldiers through war. Others became trusted companions for sportsmen, target shooters, or families who passed them from one generation to the next.
This project exists to help preserve those stories through careful research, reliable reference material, and historical documentation.

The Records Bureau is intended to be a starting point for research—not the final answer. Whenever possible, original factory records and published reference works should remain the primary sources.
Why “Seeing the Elephant”?
During the nineteenth century, the phrase “Seeing the Elephant” was used to describe experiencing something extraordinary firsthand.
Today, the phrase reflects the journey of researching historic firearms. Every firearm has traveled through time.
Learning where it has been—and preserving that history—is part of the collector’s journey.
